The Social in Social Bookmarking

Two people who bookmark the same site have demonstrated some overlap in their interests. Diigo and some other social bookmarking sites make this information available (at least the information that has been saved as public). Here is how you take advantage of this sharing opportunity to discover other resources that you may find of value. Start with a bookmark that you find to be particularly useful or interesting. From the “share” menu heading associated with that bookmark select “link to the meta page” (see the following image).

The meta page will contain a text box within which you can scroll data that will include the name of other individuals who shared the same bookmark (in public) and the tags that individuals attached to the bookmark. Selecting a name will provide access to the public bookmarks stored by that individual and selecting a tag will provide access to the other bookmarks stored by that individual with that tag. (See the following image) We admit that this may seem a little creepy and others may not have made the effort to mark their bookmarks as “private” even though the “Private” checkbox is quite obvious when working on the Diigo site.

If you would prefer to discover resources in another way, you might explore joining public groups contributing bookmarks on a topic that interests you (we list a few suggests at the end of this section). To identify possibilities, locate the “My Groups” link - it should appear at the top of the page no matter what Diigo page you are exploring. The My Groups page lists groups you have already joined, should offer suggestions based on your personal collection of bookmarks, and should contain a “Browse popular groups” link that will take you to an extensive topical directory from which you can locate thousands of groups. By the way, there is a difference between a public bookmark and sharing a bookmark to a group. When editing a bookmark on the Diigo site, a checkbox associated with a bookmark will allow sharing to a group. When this checkbox is checked, a list of your groups will appear and you then indicate the group for which the bookmark is intended.
