Flickr Security Issues - Assign security settings as a batch action

Classroom projects often unfold this sequence:

  • Upload all images
  • Examine this group of images and move those suited to the purpose at hand into a set
  • Work on the images in the set to sequence, modify, tag, annotate, etc.
  • Share (if the images are part of a social project)

Batch actions can also be applied to all of the images in a set saving the time required in applying the same action to individual images. This may not sound like much, but consider that some projects may involve many images and there is sometimes an advantage in being certain that actions have been applied in a uniform way. What actions might be of interest? Some of the most frequently used would probably include:

  • Adding common tags to all images
  • Add items to a match
  • Change permissions for all images

Security - Educators need to be concerned with the security of content stored on the web and with the privacy of student users. There are many situations in which sharing content is the goal, but it is important to have control over what content is shared and who will have access. Security can be assigned set by set - some sets might be shared with friends and some available to the public. Working with sets even makes the designation convenient - permissions can be assigned to all images within a set. The following two videos address Flickr permissions (security of access and viewing). The first video describes our recommended strategy for controlling access and the second video demonstrates a simple way to check on the success of your security measures.
