{"id":710,"date":"2006-05-29T21:19:16","date_gmt":"2006-05-30T02:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studytools.psych.und.nodak.edu\/wordpress\/?p=710"},"modified":"2008-03-15T23:44:02","modified_gmt":"2008-03-15T23:44:02","slug":"ignoring-disruptive-technologies-is-futile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/learningaloud.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/29\/ignoring-disruptive-technologies-is-futile\/","title":{"rendered":"Blocking disruptive technologies is futile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have run into a number of issues within the last couple of weeks that have reminded me of the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disruptive_technology\">disruptive technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These issues include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/studytools.psych.und.nodak.edu\/wordpress\/?p=702\">DOPA<\/a> &#8211; legislation proposed to require schools to block commercial networking sites<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dorgan.senate.gov\/newsroom\/record.cfm?id=255904\">Net neutrality<\/a> &#8211; issue of whether service providers should be able to prioritize what users access (e.g., preventing dsl providers from slowing access to VOIP)<\/li>\n<li>Educational institutions concerned with built-in video <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macintouch.com\/readerreports\/macbook\/topic4264.html\">capabilities of new Apple computers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What these issues have in common is a perceived threat from new capabilities of technology. Internet users may use VOIP rather than the phone because VOIP is less expensive than long distance.
