Other Photo Sharing Services
We spend a good deal of time describing the capabilities of Flickr because Flickr is well established and offers tools (groups, tags, comments) suited to participatory web activities. There are certainly other services worth exploring.

LifeSnapz is a very recent photosharing site with a little different approach. It is defined to support contributions within defined sets of users. The recency of this option prevents us from investing a great deal of energy in describing this service, but we have authored a blog entry that offers more information.
500px is another new site with a greater emphasis on social components. A limited free and a paid version are available. This site intends to attract professional photographers and encourages you to follow the pros. (We will add a few pictures so you can explore a site.)
